הרצאה בנושא:     "Don Joseph Nassi,  Omnipotent Jewish Advisor of the Ottoman Sultans in the 16th Century"

As opposed to his well-known aunt, Gracia Nassi, immortalized time and again in historic novels and on the Tiberias promenade, Don Joseph Nassi has to his name only a street in Herzliya. Don Joseph was the one who in fact ruled for some time, the politics and finances of the Turkish Empire, when it conquered the Balkans and Hungary, and threatened Venice and Vienna. Born in Portugal as a Christian, in a converted Jewish bankers’ family, he was raised in Spanish Brussels in the best European aristocratic standards, Don Joseph made his own fortune in Lyons, France, only to run away together with his aunt to the Turkish capital, where he lived as a Jew and served as Imperial Financial Councilor, leading up to his nomination by the Sultan as Duke of Naxos Island. We shall follow him in his career, in his intervention in the major wars against Venice leading to the Turkish conquest of Cyprus, and in his contribution to the Jewish cultural Renaissance and to the proto-Zionist Project – Tiberias.
